The EU Commission has proposed a change to the Directive on the registration of persons on board passenger ships. Reporting obligations will be adapted to new technological developments so that rescue authorities have immediate access to important personal data in an emergency.

cepPolicyBrief

Status

A strict obligation to report the number of people on board passenger ships and the switch to electronic communication of all registration data, allow the rescue authorities to gain immediate access to important data in the event of an accident or emergency. The ability to report the number of people via the on-board automatic identification system (AIS) offers, in cep's view, a more cost-effective procedure. In addition, eliminating the potential overlap of reporting obligations reduces red tape.
