The EU Commission lays out its programme of future legislative and non-legislative initiatives for the protection or restoration of biodiversity. A cepPolicyBrief takes account of the planned measures.

Status

As nature thrives better in protected areas, enlarging them can be an effective instrument for stopping biodiversity loss. However, the protection of biodiversity protection needs to be balanced with economic and social needs. Market mechanisms alone cannot always ensure the protection of biodiversity. Regulatory measures may therefore be justified. However, such measures should be cost-efficient. EU-wide criteria for classifying protected areas can create a comparable level of protection of biodiversity across all Member States.
