The EU Commission wants to further deregulate international bus and coach services. In addition, national bus and coach services are to be opened up to foreign competition and inter-urban buses and coaches guaranteed fair access to bus stations.

Status

cep does not believe that opening up national markets for inter-urban bus and coach services will lead to the results forecast by the Commission in all Member States. Also, the impact that opening markets will have on publicly subsidised passenger transport in particular has not been given sufficient consideration. The decision on further market opening should therefore remain with the Member States until submission of an objectively substantiated legislative proposal which looks into the peculiarities of the Member States.
