The expansion of cross-border gas infrastructure increases the security of the gas supply in those EU Member States that are currently highly dependent on only one gas supplier. CO₂ limits for motor vehicles cannot however guarantee that the CO₂ reduction targets for the road transport sector will be achieved with accuracy or at minimal cost. Instead, the existing EU Emission Trading System should be extended to include the road transport sector.
