In order to reduce CO2 emissions in the road transport sector, CO2emission targets for lorries are to be introduced for the first time. The EU Commission has therefore submitted a proposal for a Regulation.

Status

In cep’s view, CO2 targets for lorries do not guarantee that CO2 emissions caused by road haulage will be reduced to the desired degree. EU-wide CO2 targets are also based on insufficient data and, in view of the long product cycles applicable to lorries, are too strict. In addition, the financial penalties are disproportionately high and therefore in breach of EU law.
